Underfloor heating in Guildford and Surrey, designed for heat pumps
Underfloor heating and a heat pump suit each other. A floor has a huge surface area, so it can heat a room with water at 30 to 35°C, and a heat pump running that cool is at its most efficient. Radiators sized for the same job usually need warmer water. If you are extending, building or renovating and thinking about a heat pump, a wet underfloor system is usually the best emitter you can choose. We design and install both, as one system.
Two ways to fit it
Screed systems for new builds and extensions
Pipe clipped or laid in panels on the insulation, then screeded over. The floor build-up is designed with your builder or architect so the insulation depth, pipe spacing and screed thickness match the heat loss of each room. This is the version to use whenever the floor is coming up anyway.
Low-profile overlay for existing floors
Grooved boards, 15 to 20 mm thick, laid on top of the existing floor with the pipe pressed in. No digging out, so it works for a kitchen, a ground floor refit or a house where the screed system is not an option. It adds a little height at doors and stairs, which we check before we recommend it. Output is lower than a screed system, so it depends on the heat loss, and we tell you if radiators would do a better job in a given room.
How we design it
Room by room heat loss calculation, the same one we do for a heat pump. Pipe spacing and loop lengths set to the heat loss and the floor covering, so the design flow temperature stays as low as possible. Manifold position, zoning and controls planned with the heat pump, not bolted on afterwards. Floor coverings checked: tile and stone are ideal, engineered wood is fine within its temperature limits, and thick carpet with underlay cuts output. Commissioned with the heat pump: pressure tested, balanced, and the weather compensation set for the floor.
Mixing floors and radiators
Most retrofits end up with underfloor downstairs and radiators upstairs. That is fine when it is designed for. What causes trouble is an underfloor system added to a boiler-era radiator circuit with a mixing valve and a buffer, running at two different temperatures. We design the whole house to one flow temperature where we can, which keeps the heat pump efficient and the controls simple.

Common questions
Can I have underfloor heating without a heat pump?
Yes, it works with a boiler too. We would still design it for low temperatures so that a heat pump can take over later without changing the floor.
Does underfloor heating work in an older house?
It works well if the heat loss is known and the system is sized to it. Older houses with high heat loss may need insulation or radiators in some rooms alongside the floor. The survey tells you which.
How long does it take to heat up?
A screed floor is slow, several hours from cold, so it is run on weather compensation and left to tick over rather than switched on and off. Overlay systems respond faster.
Is there a grant?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers the heat pump, not the floor. The underfloor heating is priced separately as part of the installation.
